April-December 2025, in Stockholm, Sweden and in Copenhagen, Denmark
The purpose of the course is to explain and practice philosophical underpinnings of management and organizational studies. Besides epistemological considerations (how to produce knowledge) we will consider ontological aspects (what there IS to be known). We will explore the differences between “epistemology” and “ontology” and illustrate this by actual philosophical debates in social science.
In block 1, we will investigate so called “battles on reality” (the use of “hermeneutical approaches” for interpreting the world), in block 2 we will introduce new philosophies of institution exemplified by “new Hegelian approaches to corporations” and in block 3 we will introduce recent ideas on “social ontologies”. Focus will be on digesting, analyzing, and discussing the three philosophical perspectives in question, and its implications for contemporary social science research.
